Endoscopy

Endoscopy
If you are suffering with persistent nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain or have difficulty swallowing, an endoscopy or upper GI endoscopy procedure might be needed to allow one of our doctors here at Manhattan Internal Medicine Associates, P.C. to view potential problems without a large incision.

What is an Endoscopy?
This is a procedure that doesn't require surgery and is used to help our doctors
  • Dr. Kathryn Alcarez
  • Dr. Howard Antosofsky
  • Dr. Ashima Bakhru
  • Dr. Ruvan Shein
  • Dr. Howard Siegel
  • Dr. Robert Udesky
to examine your digestive tract. Using a flexible tube with a camera and light attached to it (endoscope), they are able to see photos on a color TV monitor of your digestive tract. One of our doctors inserts the endoscope through a tiny incision or another opening in your body such as your mouth. Using scissors and tongs (forceps) on the endoscope, the doctor removes tissue for a biopsy.

Our doctor performs an examination, reviews your symptoms, and might order blood tests before the endoscopy procedure. These help the doctor identify the potential cause of your symptoms and determine if an endoscopy or surgery is needed to treat the problem.

Preparing for your Endoscopy
For the most effective and safest exam, you should show up at your appointment with an empty stomach (at least 6 hours of fasting before exam). The doctor could give you an enema or laxative to use the evening before your procedure to help clear out your system. You should also ask someone else to drive you home once the procedure is over since you will have been given anesthesia.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above and feel you might need an endoscopy or if your general practitioner advises you to get an endoscopy, give our New York, NY Manhattan Internal Medicine Associates, P.C. office a call at 212-725-5300 to come in and consult with one of our doctors.
